2009.01.21 Cool Photo of Vancouver

Cool photo of Vancouver from Last week.
Copy right: Lawson Lundell LLP.

A friend forwarded this photo to me. Genius.

Yes, since last week, the weather turned to foggy very suddenly at around 3PM, EVERYDAY! I've never met such regular fog. I believe this photo is taken from the air, you can find the whole city is buried by fog.

By the way, is it my illusion? When I am writing this diary at SUB(Student Union Building), I find the outside is a little misty, is it starting foggy again?

2009.01.19 ARTH 361

Today is the day of ARTH 361.
Prof postponed our first paper, which should be due next Wednesday, but she just distributed guidelines today. Therefore, the deadline is reset on 23 Feb, after the reading break. Thanks prof, your decision can't be better.

Another thing, I realize the Internet is such a terrible instrument again. This photo is a hint. Anyway, my dear prof's personal and private life is exposed...too much -_-

Pls, never never write my full name in the Internet. If you ever did, delete it. To protect others is protecting yourself. Thanks.
-----------------------------------------------------
Notes for today and ever:
Always take care of others.
Stop talking about self, money.
Choose the appropriate words to use, is an art. I'm a beginner.

2009.01.18 Climbing & Homework

Washing some dishes is the break between climbing and moving on to endless readings.
Tomorrow I'll have a French quiz, subjonctif.
Nothing is easy, sigh.

2009.01.17 Complication VS Simplism

Today our lab welcomed two pairs of participants. It's a busy day. (PS: photo is a lab group photo taken in December, 2008)

Finally, only me left in prof's car. I told something about my career plan. Biz, marketing, art, psychology. I was wondering whether can I use some psychology into marketing. Apparently, she disliked marketing. She gave me an example: marketing people believe violence is the the reason why customers buy the violent games. However, people love action. Marketing people can't separate action from violence.

Her opinion is - those marketing people's thoughts are too simple. Psychology is complicated. My extension is, many things are complicated, we should not simply them.

2009.01.16 Four Ambitions with Girls!

#1: SFU

#2: Victoria

#3: Ski trip! (Grouse Mountain)

#4: the U.S.! (Seattle)

Today's lunch with other 3 girls from China is very progressive. Details are in the above pictures. They are the places I've planned for long. All failed because Alex has no intention:(

Girls, I love you! Hope we will make them out soon.

2009.01.15 Other's Splendidness

This is one part of the campus that I adore so much. Seagulls are wandering on the sidewalk. Remind me those fat gooses at UNNC.

You'll never know how creative students can be. This term "paper" is not mine, someone else in EOSC 314, he or she made an extraordinary work - a journal with leather cover, every page is deliberately yellowed as an antique. Genius! (Hint: you can compare it with those plain ones in the box on the ground. A random guy is searching for his paper.)

2009.01.14 Sudoku

I've been drowned in the sudoku world for a while, earlier than the Term 1 finals came. My 2008 December can be summarized with 3 things: sudoku, minesweeper, and exams.

Today is the first time I entered the "2 min club". I hope one day I can finish it in less than 2 min.

2009.01.13 My B Day, My Blood

The second right tube contains my 10ml blood, which is drawn at the beginning of the first session.
Are these photos scary? Sorry.

4 years ago, I chose blood donation to memorialize my accession to manhood, 200ml. I wanted to do something good. The brands and packages of free milk and cookies were something I can't forget. I was brave.

4 years later, coincidentally on the same day, I participated in a bio-psychological study, 20ml blood is required for each session. The second session will be one week later. An honorarium of $30 in total for two sessions. Almost one night in Paris. I am living in a material world, at same time, do no evil.

2009.01.12 Apple

What's the percentage of a leaf appears in an apple's portrayal?

What's the chance of YOU have eaten an apple with a leaf attached?

Naturalism VS Realism? Inspiration from today's English class, thanks Spencer.

2009.01.11 Cloverfield

Beth
Lily

Movie of the Day: Cloverfield.

The impression in my mind is, wow, these two actresses are really charming. Same thing happened in Sin City, that movies made me keep an eye on Jessica Alba. Mr. & Mrs Smith, Jolie is way much hotter than Pitt. Scarlett Johansson, she is the only reason that I enjoy any movie has she in.

Strange, why can't I love male actors that much as female actresses? I'm sure I'm not an L.

2009.01.10 Resume Climbing

So many routes! Are you excited?
This is the only pic of me today, I was bouldering. Nice gym.
My partner! He is a real gentleman, trusted me to belay for him. I failed the belay test at the beginning, because I got a bad bad memory, I even forgot how to make the rope cross the ATC! My partner had a rope in the car, so he gave me a chance to refresh my skills. The staff was nice, after I showed my ability in using figure 8 & ATC, she let me pass. GREAT! I think I will buy a 3 month membership soon.

2009.01.09 Discovery

The truth is, that yellow damn thing is a not paper board, but an art work made of 5 centimeter thick metal piece! But I still don't what's it, who was it for, what's its function etc...

PS: the snow man has gone...what a pity

2009.01.08 Textbooks

ARTH 100, custom textbook costed me $138.08

I am not a person willing to sell old textbooks, but this one, I have to say, if the bookstore accepts it, I will sell it absolutely. As an Art History textbook, it is inelegant, rough. I am disappointed. Maybe the publisher didn't have enough time or money to get the best material and prepare the molds. They just scanned every whole page of old textbooks and copy them as a whole, rather than printed pictures and words separately. The texts are blurring.

About one week ago, I decided to go to Paris this summer. After that decision, all the money I'm spending now is automatically converted to the possible expense in Europe. I'm even not willing to buy a bottle of water - 2 dollar is 1 euro! This ugly textbook is three nights accommodation in Paris!

2009.01.07 Visual Analysis

The snow man just stands outside the building, when I was waiting for my class. I was attracted. This is the only view I got, I didn't step further. Now I think I should have done, what's his face? I'm badly curious now.

This term's ARTH 100 is quite different from the last term's. Let me use this picture as an example to tell the ARTH philosophy. Let's look at the the yellow object in the centre of the pic. What is it? Is it art? Who was it for? What is the subject matter? or what is the function? What is the purpose or underlying theme? Why it is important or is deemed necessary? What visual language or style is used? Why is that style used? How the visual language, theme and subject work together? Finally, did the object influence or impact audience?

I have to admit, because I didn't walk further, so I didn't know what's the view from the other side, and I have no idea what that yellow damn thing is. It is just very impressive.

2009.01.06 Book Store

This U-shape line is for returning books, and there is another line inside the store. On the other hand, the line for purchasing is...like a giant snake, twisting 20 rounds and covering the whole clothing section. I just didn't dare to take that scene with my cell phone in the crowd. Sorry folks, no more pic.

--------------------------------------
Today we had the first ARTH 100 class in the Term 2. That is the only whole-year course I've ever enrolled. Nice to have the same classmates for one year, or even more, like Chris to Alex. Mine are Lynn and Christine. Lynn is a Korean girl, but her home is in Mexico. She can speak perfect Korean, English...maybe Spanish? I don't know how fluently can she speak, but she can understand much at least. She is learning Chinese right now! Christine, is the other Chinese girl in my lab. No one else in the room can understand our Mandarin, that's comfortable. She just came back from Paris, I'm jealous at her. It would make me feel awesome if when the prof is talking about Mona Lisa and I just saw the original work with my own eyes a week ago. She did it.

-------------------------------------
Here is the bonus of today's diary:

When I was having dinner, thanks to aunt's reminder, I found an interesting difference between my middle school classmates (M) and university classmates (U).

When I was chatting with M, we would talk about their jobs, and the companies may be a domestic bank, a newly established advertising agency, a steel trading SOE, and a building company etc, and all of them are in China, majority of the companies locate in NB (our hometown).

But if I was chatting with U, the conversation was:
-"Wow, you got an offer! What's the program? Which country will you go to?"
-"My master program is management / translation etc. in the UK/Australia etc."
or
-"Wow, he got the offer from KPMG/HSBC etc. (anyway, any name of the Big Four or an International bank)"

2009.01.05 First Day in Class

Walking in the snow, alone, is not fun at all. Plus, I have 3 classes in a row on MWF mornings, gosh, 4 classes in a row on Wednesdays. Guess what's worse, each classroom is several hundred meters far from the next one. All my 10-min breaks have to be devoted to moving between the classrooms. Exercise fresh?

Today, SFU is closed due to the weather condition, why not UBC? I took the pics at the bus loop, why didn't the cute track sweeper come minutes earlier? It appeared right after I crossed the dirty nasty icy water puddle with my genuine leather boots. Well, if it had passed earlier, I would have no pic for today's diary.

2009.01.03 ARTH Term Paper

2008 is a great year for me, in an academic sense.

At UNNC, my GPA of the 2007/08 academic year was out of my expectation, and I got Dean's scholarship in November. Thanks Sisi.

In the summer, I passed LPI in one month, at the second try. Thanks Tracy.

My results of the first 2008/09 term at UBC are even more fabulous. Both of my science courses scores are over 10 points above the average, should I switch the faculty? Kidding...I hate chemistry, physics etc. Thanks Alex.

AND, I cannot be more satisfied with the score of my Art History paper, which I just received today. Thanks TA Jenni, thanks Prof.

The new term is coming in two days. I should have been ready, but I am NOT! It's time to OWN again! So do everyone watching this page. (Btw, I stole the word "own" from Alex, that's funny.)

2009.01.02 The Last Bowl of Cherries

We bought a box of cherries from Costco four days ago.
This is the last bowl of cherries.
Fresh cherries come in the summer.
It is still wonderful for me to enjoy cherries in the winter even though they are not so fresh.
If one cannot live forever, die young is an alternative.
So I eat them as fast as I can.

I believe cherry is one of the reasons why I returned to N. America.
You can seduce me with cherries, honestly.

One Year Anniversary!
